Politics, Relativity, and Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy and society – Thoughts about today

Psychotherapy and societyare deeply interconnected in an era where we are overwhelmed by information from all directions. The choice of what is relevant and credible becomes increasingly difficult, and rapid changes give us the feeling that we must always be on the move to avoid falling behind. Shocking headlines are constantly being launched to grab our attention to articles, as there is an infinite number of articles available at any time.

This diversity challenges us, it can paralyze us in making choices, or even provoke anxiety. Moreover, it puts us in a situation where we are always looking for the "ideal tagline." There are even apps that provide book summaries in just 15 minutes, attempting to capture the essence of the book while neglecting the true pleasure of reading, or the simple unfolding of a text that may contain long and monotonous passages, but which, together, create a moment of reflection. In a way, we want to consume everything quickly, but without going deeper than the surface of things.

Politics is based on presenting a candidate and their position on various issues. Without going into too much detail about electoral campaigns, the main idea is that no one delves deeply into the situations; they merely present their positions on current issues. I believe that, without having an exhaustive knowledge of history, we can say that everything happening now is a consequence of past choices, and the current state of affairs is much more complex than simply choosing one side over the other. The same thing happens with our minds and emotions. We struggle to go to psychotherapy, and when we do, we do it to quickly find a simple solution or advice that helps us solve the immediate problem. It is easy to understand why more and more types of short therapies have emerged to meet the urgent need of many of us: "I don't have time, help me now!"

Although I do not completely reject this 21st-century mentality regarding ideas about psychotherapy and society, and my view of self, I try to go beyond the surface. From childhood, I understood that beyond what we say or do, there is more. I learned that silence can be more meaningful than a long conversation. I noticed that we often strongly support something but act differently. Later, I discovered the unconscious and its significant impact on our lives, which led me to train in psychotherapy that goes beyond what is obvious.

For clarification, there are three professional categories: psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychotherapist. A psychologist has studied psychology, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor specialized in psychiatry who has the right to prescribe medication, and a psychotherapist undergoes additional training after university in a type of therapy they consider effective. These trainings can include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Gestalt, Psychoanalysis, and many others. For example, in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the training lasts 4 years and also includes the candidate's personal therapy, with a minimum of two sessions per week. This is a profound process because, in order to be a good psychotherapist, you must know yourself before helping someone else.

Despite the above, I want to emphasize that I believe in a therapeutic approach that goes beyond a temporary symptom, such as insomnia or phobias. I would advocate for long-term therapy, which requires time to produce real results. In an era where time seems to be the most limited resource, we do everything we can to save it. Paradoxically, we never have enough time for the things that don't matter, and those are the very "trivialities" that define our lives. Just as everyone chooses how to manage their time, we also choose how to frame these trivialities in our lives, and when we talk about psychotherapy and society, they are essential in deeply understanding how we influence and are influenced by our inner and social realities.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy requires time to build an authentic relationship and understand the client. Contrary to what is believed, a psychotherapist does not provide quick solutions or ready-made advice. Psychotherapy is centered on the individual and adapts to them. The patient is the one who dictates the pace and depth of the therapeutic process. Psychodynamic therapy does not only address visible symptoms, but also provides a deep interpretation of the reality perceived by the patient. It involves continuous reflection on oneself, which can lead to lasting changes. In this context, when we talk about psychotherapy and society, they are linked because the individual therapeutic process also influences social dynamics, helping people to better understand both their own experiences and the impact these have on social relationships.

Of course, there are also short-term therapies within psychodynamic approaches. The duration of therapy depends on the patient's needs and the nature of the issue brought into therapy. However, for profound and lasting change, like that offered by psychoanalytic therapy, a long-term commitment is required. Everything we build in life takes time, and when it comes to inner transformations, time is essential.

If you're ready to begin a deep self-awareness process and better understand your impact on society, schedule a psychotherapy session here.

In a world overwhelmed by information and speed, people seek quick solutions and summaries, but ignore the complexity of inner processes. Psychotherapy, however, requires time and depth. Psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy focus on a deep understanding of the individual and lasting changes, and to help effectively, the therapist must know the patient well and adapt to their needs. Although there are also short-term therapies, profound changes occur only through a continuous process. In an age of speed, we need time to understand and transform what defines us, and when we talk about psychotherapy and society , they are closely linked because these inner processes are reflected in social dynamics, influencing both individuals and communities.

Psychology is not just a set of techniques, but a deep understanding of human diversity. I believe that each person is unique, and that in order to truly help, it takes time, empathy, and genuine interest. Therapy is not just about finding quick solutions, but about understanding and accompanying each client's process of change.
